PURPOSE OF UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose PURPOSE is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative, supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

A member of United Methodist Women is one who commits herself to our purpose and chooses to participate in meetings, prayer, giving, study, action and/or service. The organization celebrates an inclusive membership and welcomes all women who want to be members.

Education is central to expanding our concepts of mission. Through a wide variety of events and resources on Conference, District and Local levels United Methodist Women can grow in their relationship to God through Jesus Christ.

A UMW PROJECT OPEN THE DOOR TO
LITERACY FOR CHILDREN

PENNIES FOR PEACE - a program of the Central Asia Institute. This organization has built schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The author, Greg Mortensen, of the book, THREE CUPS OF TEA, funded and facilitated the first school in Pakistan. This book is on the UMW Reading List.

Your pennies will help build schools and provide teachers salaries and school supplies for children. A collection box is located on the table in the entry hall near the Fellowship Hall.

In 1993 Greg Mortenson”s sister Christa died after a lengthy illness and in dealing with this loss he took a break from his job as a nurse and flew to Pakistan to climb the second highest mountain in the world, K-2. He planned to leave his sister’s necklace at the mountaintop in her memory. He got lost and never made it to the top and ended up in a village in Pakistan called Korphe (kor-FAY). They cared for him and nursed him back to health.

In this village there were 79 boys and girls writing with a stick in the sand to do their school work. No building in which to meet, no supplies to use and the village could not afford the $1.00 a day to pay a teacher. Greg witnessed their fierce desire and determination to learn and he promised to build them a school which would cost $12,000.00.

He returned to the United States and sold everything he could, worked a double shift as a nurse and lived in his car. He sent out letters to 580 celebrities asking for help and all he received from this effort was $100.00 from one newscaster. Greg’s mom was a school principal and she asked him to come talk to the students about the kids in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Six weeks later that class sent him $623.40 in pennies and as a result PENNIES FOR PEACE was born. In 2008 PENNIES FOR PEACE was in 278 schools in the United States and in 2009 it is in 4,400 school. He now has support from others throughout the country.

His organization is called Central Asia Institute and Pennies for Peace has built and supplied 131 schools in Pakistand 48 in Pakistan. In 2000 thre were 800,000 students in Afghanistan, mostly boys. Now there are 8.5 million students includig 2.5 million girls. This is the greatest increase in school enrollment in any country’s history.
