Reflect the Image

And it was Good                      Reflect the Image

Genesis 1:24-31

24 Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind: cattle and creeping things and beasts of the earth after their kind”; and it was so God made the beasts of the earth after their kind, and the cattle after their kind, and everything that creeps on the ground after its kind; and God saw that it was good.  Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the 1sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”  27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.  28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.  29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you;  30 and to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the sky and to every thing that moves on the earth which has life, I have given every green plant for food”; and it was so.  31 God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.
Reflect On: What would it mean to act as an image of God to all those I meet in my daily routine?

    Designed for Change

And it was Good                            Designed for Change

    Genesis 1:14-19

    Designed for Change
God creates the lights in the sky, and they will mark events and sacred seasons.  There is a separation of day and night, summer and winter.  There are three way seasons have an impact in our lives.  We want to only stay n good seasons (never want the rain to fall or the ice to come).  We try to rush through seasons that are difficult.  Or we get stuck in seasons that are difficult, thinking they will never end.

    Season for Everything

Ecclesiastes says there's a season for everything.  God created in a way that gave us seasons.  So why do we think seasons won't change (or don't have to change).

The Hebrew word translated seasons - moadim, plural of mo'ed - comes from the root word ya'ad, to appoint.  This noun is used 223 times in Hebrew scriptures.  It designates a determined time and place - an appointed time or place.  Time such as the birth of a child, the coming of a plague, migration of a bird, etc.  In Hebrew it is used to describe sacred seasons.  For us, it would be like Easter, Pentecost, etc.  The priests again are affirming that God is still acting.   It may feel to them like they're stuck in this season, but seasons, change, because that's the way God designed his creation.  And that is good.

The language used to describe the sun and moon is very intentional - greater light, lesser light.  Sun  and moon represented gods in other cultures.  The priests declare they are not gods, but creations of the One True God.  God appointed the times of seasons, not these other, false gods.

To the people in Babylon, Jeremiah prophesied that the people had 70 more years in Babylon.  That sounds horrible, and yet it clearly declares that eve this season will end.

Life point:  In and through all our season, God's creative power is at work.

    Memory verse:  Jeremiah 29:11

    Reflect On:
    1) Which sacred season (Advent, Christmas, etc.) gives your life shape and form in this season of your life?

2)How do I want to live so I can be who I want to be?

    Life Happens

And it was Good                                Life Happens

    Genesis 1:9-13

9 Then God said, “Let the waters below the heavens be gathered into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so.

10 God called the dry land earth, and the gathering of the waters He called seas; and God saw that it was good.

11 Then God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind with seed in them”; and it was so.

12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with seed in them, after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

13 There was evening and there was morning, a third day.

Life HappensOn day three in the week of life of God he separates the waters on the earth for land to appear.  DAY THREE completes a triad of separations begun on day one.  These separations are what make it possible to inhabit the earth.  These separations are what make life possible.   The first separations is the separation of day and night, it gives organization to our time, space to our days.  In day two, God separates the waters so there is vertical space.  On DAY THREE God completes the triad.  He reaches his hand down to earth and separates the waters so land can appear - now life is able to happen  - small green sprouts of vegetation begin pushing their  way up through the ground - LIFE HAPPENS

Life Point:  When you look clearly at the hand of God you see that it is covered with scratches because - LIFE HAPPENS.

    Memory Verse: Psalm 104:30

    Reflect On:
When are sometimes God has made "LIFE HAPPEN" for you?

    God Cannot Give Up

And It Was Good                                God Cannot Give Up

    Genesis 1:6-8

    God Cannot Give Up

6 Then God said, “Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters.” 7 God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so.  8 God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

Day Two continues a triad of separations begun on day one and completed on day three.  These separations are what make it possible to inhabit the earth.  The first separation is the separation of day and night, it gives organization to our time, space to our days.  On day three God separates the water on earth so land can appear and life can happen.  On Day two God separates the waters, the waters above from the waters below so there is vertical space.

The structure of the day continues; "There is evening , there is morning..."  HUMAN BEINGS CANNOT CHANGE THE ORDER OF TIME AND SPACE.  There is evening and there is morning - a day, it is repetitious.  This sequence of order is a guarantee - a promise that God's covenant with the people will never be broken by God.

The surety of God's promise is in the words "And evening passed and morning came, marking the second day."

In a world in which we believe promises are made to be broken, there is evening, there is morning, a day.  A surety that God's promises will never be broken.  "If you can break my covenant I made with the day and with the night so that one does not follow the other, only then will my covenant ...be broken."  Jeremiah 33:20-21 NLT

Because God's promises are as solid and permanent as creation, we need not give up.  Because God cannot give up.

Life Point:  God's promises are as certain as evening and morning.

    Memory verse:  Jeremiah 33:20-21

    God Speaks – Good Happens

And It Was Good           Day One: God Speaks - Good Happens

    Genesis 1:1-5

    The Creation

God Speaks - Good Happens1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.  3 Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.  4 God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness.  5 God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

The people find themselves exiled to a foreign land.  It is hard to imagine such a thing in the midst of their despair, anger, confusion and chaos.  A word of hope is offered; God's creative word.  In the midst of this unproductive emptiness, a life void of meaning, the people are given assurance through an affirmation of faith of God's creative power.  It is a structured affirmation for time of chaos; God speaks - It comes into being - God declares it good - And gives it a name.

Life point:  In the midst of a mess - God speaks a creative life giving word and something good happens.

    Memory Verse:  Isaiah 9:2
The people who walk in darkness
    Will see a great light;
Those who live in a dark land,
The light will shine on them.
