Baggage – Autonomy                         Jeremiah 2:1-5, 21

John 15:1-8

Independence, liberty , self-determination, and autonomy are our banner words and values we lift high today.

These words are not words and values of faithful and fruitful disciples.

We live under the illusion that autonomy (even autonomy from God) is necessary for a fulfilling life.

Jeremiah speaks prophetically to the people regarding an autonomous relationship from God.  Jesus speaks prophetically to his disciples about autonomy.

Our faithfulness is discipleship and fulfillment in life are not found in our autonomy.  They are found in our connection to God and Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit.

John 15:1, 4-5 (CEB) reads I am the true vine, and my Father is the vineyard keeper.
4)Remain in me, and I will remain in you.  A branch can’t produce fruit by itself, but must remain in the vine.  Likewise, you can’t produce fruit unless you remain in me. 5) I am the vine, you are the branches.  If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit.  Without me, you can’t do anything.

Reflect on…

1) As a Christian, how does freedom differ from autonomy?

2) What freedom that God gives do you value most?
