Christ: The Liberating King

Christ or Messiah in Hebrew, means God’s anointed, liberating King.  In our democratic governance it is challenging to talk about Christ (God’s Anointed) as King.  Sometimes kings were ruthless dictators who exploited people.  Kings sometimes led the people into apostasy, idolatry, and extreme faithlessness.  And kings sometimes led religious reforms to bring people back to God.

People were expecting Christ to be a second King David, to restore the great empire they experienced with King David.  They desired a return to former days.  Jesus as Christ, God’s anointed, the liberating king shows people a new and alternative kingdom – the kingdom of God.  Even in our democratic governance, we as Christians are called to live in this new and alternative kingdom, the Kingdom of God.

The life of the Christian changes when we live more as citizens of God’s kingdom than as citizens of secular society.

Think about:
How will/would your Christmas be different if you celebrated it as primarily a citizen of God’s kingdom rather than a citizen of the secular society?

Memory Verse:
Isaiah 9:6
A child is born to us, a son is given to us,
and authority will be on his shoulders.
He will be named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
