Come to the Water – Come On In~The Water’s Fine

Come to the Water sermon series

John 4:28-29

The woman put down her water jar and went into the city. She said to the people, 29 “Come and see a man who has told me everything I’ve done! Could this man be the Christ?”

John 4:39-42

39 Many Samaritans in that city believed in Jesus because of the woman’s word when she testified, “He told me everything I’ve ever done.” 40 So when the Samaritans came to Jesus, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days. 41 Many more believed because of his word, 42 and they said to the woman, “We no longer believe because of what you said, for we have heard for ourselves and know that this one is truly the savior of the world.”

The woman cannot help but tell others about Jesus. When we experience the acceptance, cleansing, true life and transforming power of Jesus we can’t help but invite others to to encounter Jesus.

The people she tells go and seek out Jesus. They come to believe in Jesus, not because of what the woman said but because they encountered Jesus themselves.

But they wouldn’t have encountered Jesus without the woman inviting them.

I am wondering if more people don’t respond to the invitation to encounter Jesus, because they are given the wrong message about Jesus. Maybe our message is perceived as a sedentary, keep the status quo message, rather than a message for a transformed life.

Have you ever played “Marco-Polo?” One person with eyes shut tries to find someone else in the pool by yelling, “Marco” and the other swimmers reply “Polo.” The world is not saying, “Polo” because the church has stopped saying, “Marco” and trying to find the least and the lost.

The church has been saying, “Come and be like us” when the church should be saying, “Be transformed by Jesus.”

Please pray that God will open up opportunities for you to invite people to encounter Christ. Who will you invite to come and see?
