Sow What? Sow for the Kingdom

Matthew 13:1-7, 18, 22

Sowing for the KingdomHow do you sow for the kingdom?

13 That day Jesus went out of the house and sat down beside the lake. Such large crowds gathered around him that he climbed into a boat and sat down. The whole crowd was standing on the shore.

He said many things to them in parables: “A farmer went out to scatter seed. As he was scattering seed, some fell on the path, and birds came and ate it. Other seed fell on rocky ground where the soil was shallow. They sprouted immediately because the soil wasn’t deep. But when the sun came up, it scorched the plants, and they dried up because they had no roots. Other seed fell among thorny plants. The thorny plants grew and choked them.

18 “Consider then the parable of the farmer.

22 As for the seed that was spread among thorny plants, this refers to those who hear the word, but the worries of this life and the false appeal of wealth choke the word, and it bears no fruit.

Focus:

Sometimes the realities of life are more powerful than our faith.

They take up our time, energy and money. Sometimes we get overly anxious about every day concerns and do not live into a faith that God does and will provide.

Needless worrying is antithetical to faith and chokes out our joy.

Memory Verse:

Matthew 6:33

33 Instead, desire first and foremost God’s kingdom and God’s righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

Stewardship thought:

  • Do we give from a fear of scarcity or a gratitude of abundance?
  • Do we sow (i.e. spend) ruled by fear of scarcity of faith in God’s provision?

Prayer Focus:

For those who suffer from food scarcity

Reflect on:

What are your weeds of worry?
What thorns are pricking you?
